As you hike forest trails and along wetlands, you are likely to find ferns. At first glance, they may all look similar, however, there is great diversity in their shapes, sizes, and other characteristics. There are around 50 species of ferns in Michigan and more than half are either rare or found only in the upper peninsula. Join retired naturalist Chip Francke for this workshop that will focus on the life cycle and identification of common ferns found in Oceana County. The workshop, for adults and kids 10 and older, will begin with an indoor introduction at the Hart Community Center followed by a field trip to local natural areas. We will find a place to eat along the way, so pack a lunch. Space is limited. We are asking everyone to have a copy of Fern Finder: A Guide to Native Ferns of Central and Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. We will be using the book to key out the ferns we see. Please bring $6 to cover the costs of the small book.
