THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED. WE LOOK FORWARD TO HOSTING IT IN 2021.
Gales Pond Field Day will be an opportunity to rotate through several educational and engaging stations on topics related to plants and wildlife, as well as soil and water conservation. Attendees will see the program that we’ve been hosting for our local 6th graders since the 1970’s. Tentative schedule is as follows:
Station 1: Macroinvertebrate Mayhem
Rebecca Miller, Education Coordinator at Oceana Conservation District and Ray Schinler of the White River Watershed Partnership will engage attendees in a pond study. Participants will identify macroinvertebrates, find out which species are tolerant and intolerant of environmental stressors, and assess the quality of Gales Pond based on the findings.
Station 2: Wild about Wildlife
Lynda Herremans, MAEAP Technician at Oceana Conservation District, will share information about wildlife of Oceana County. She will use firs, skulls, and feathers to demonstrate animal adaptations.
Station 3: Take a Hike!
Rod Denning, Conservation District Forester, will provide an educational walk through the woods.
Station 4: Cedar Swamp Scavenger Hunt
Adam Chandler, Conservation Technician at Oceana Conservation District will help attendees develop their observation skills while discovering ferns, mosses and wildflowers typical in a cedar swamp.
Station 5: Soil Stories
Mark Kelly, District Conservationist with NRCS, will get you thinking about how important soil is, show how conservation practices are used to prevent soil erosion, and discuss farmland preservation.
